Biography
David Matthews resides in his hometown of Meridian, Mississippi. His parents being big Elvis fans wanted to name him after the king; but thought it would be better if he didn't share his name with a famous singer. It was a good thought, and he did at least beat the DMB to recording a solo many years before the band formed. However, being a recording artist was not in the cards for this Dave Matthews. Growing up, he was encouraged in his creativity by his parents and family members to draw, especially on long summer trips out west (before Gameboys). He would continue creating art, graduate high school, and attend Mississippi State University, majoring in Fine Arts.
He completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting from Mississippi State University in 1999, studying under Brent Funderburk and Jack Bartlett. In 2003, he moved to South Florida, where he earned his Master of Fine Arts degree in Painting from Florida Atlantic University graduating in 2007. He recently departed from Digital Media Arts College, where he worked for seven years as Faculty Member, then Fine Art Coordinator, and finally Program Coordinator. In these different positions, he gained experience through administration, teaching, and producing art. He is currently pursuing a career in sequential art and illustration.
"I've always been a big fan of comics, even to the extent of working in a comic book store my senior year of high school. There are so many possibilities that can be created when combining the written word with visual art; it is such a dynamic and fun medium! Currently, I am working on my first Graphic Novel, and it is such a blast to have the opportunity to do something so exciting!"
He lives at home with his wife Katy Matthews and daughter Ava.
